Isra' Wal M'iraj

The Night Journey: Isra wal Miraj - A Sacred Miracle in Islam

The Isra wal Miraj, one of the most profound miracles in Islamic history, holds immense spiritual significance for Muslims around the globe. This extraordinary event, which took place in the life of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), is narrated in the Qur'an and authentic Hadith. The journey symbolises the deep connection between the heavens and the earth, emphasising the importance of prayer, faith, and Allah's mercy.

What is Isra wal Miraj?

The Isra wal Miraj is a two-part journey undertaken by Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) during a single night. The journey consists of:

  1. Isra: The Prophet's miraculous night travel from Masjid Al-Haram in Makkah to Masjid Al-Aqsa in Jerusalem.

  2. Miraj: The ascension of the Prophet to the heavens, where he encountered divine signs, met previous prophets, and received the gift of Salah (prayer).

This miraculous event is mentioned in Surah Al-Isra (17:1):

“Glory be to Him Who made His servant travel by night from Al-Masjid Al-Haram to Al-Masjid Al-Aqsa, whose surroundings We have blessed, to show him some of Our signs. Indeed, He is the All-Hearing, the All-Seeing.”

The Isra (Night Journey to Jerusalem)

The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) was awakened by Angel Jibreel (Gabriel) and mounted a heavenly steed named Buraq, described in Hadith as being swift and radiant. Buraq carried the Prophet from the Kaaba in Makkah to Masjid Al-Aqsa in Jerusalem in an instant. Upon arrival, the Prophet led all previous prophets in prayer, symbolising his role as the seal of the prophets.

This leg of the journey highlights the sanctity of Masjid Al-Aqsa and its importance as the first Qibla for Muslims.

The Miraj (Ascension to the Heavens)

After the night journey, Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) ascended through the seven heavens, guided by Angel Jibreel. He met several prophets along the way:

  • Adam in the first heaven.

  • Yahya (John) and Isa (Jesus) in the second heaven.

  • Yusuf (Joseph) in the third heaven.

  • Idris (Enoch) in the fourth heaven.

  • Harun (Aaron) in the fifth heaven.

  • Musa (Moses) in the sixth heaven.

  • Ibrahim (Abraham) in the seventh heaven, leaning against Al-Bayt Al-Ma'mur (the heavenly Kaaba).

Beyond the seventh heaven, the Prophet reached Sidrat al-Muntaha (the Lote Tree of the Utmost Boundary), a realm inaccessible to any creation except Allah. Here, he was granted the command of Salah. Initially set at 50 prayers daily, it was reduced to five after Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) sought ease for his Ummah upon the advice of Prophet Musa.

The Significance of Isra' wal Miraj

1. Establishment of Salah

The most significant outcome of this journey was the gift of Salah, which is the cornerstone of Islamic worship. It serves as a direct connection between Muslims and Allah, emphasising discipline, unity, and devotion.

2. Reinforcement of Faith

The miraculous nature of the journey tested the faith of the believers. Those who affirmed it, like Abu Bakr (As-Siddiq), were strengthened in their Iman. The event underscores the importance of trusting Allah’s wisdom and the truth of divine miracles.

3. Highlighting the Sanctity of Masjid Al-Aqsa

The inclusion of Masjid Al-Aqsa underscores its centrality in Islamic spirituality. It remains one of the holiest sites in Islam, symbolising unity and collective worship.

Authentic Hadith on Isra' wal Miraj

The events of Isra wal Miraj are narrated in various authentic Hadith collections, including Sahih Bukhari and Sahih Muslim.

One notable narration is from Sahih Bukhari:

“Then he (Gabriel) took me to the heavens. Jibreel knocked on the gate of the first heaven. The gatekeepers asked, 'Who is it?' Jibreel replied, 'I am Jibreel.' They asked, 'Who is accompanying you?' Jibreel replied, 'Muhammad.'” (Bukhari: 3207)

Another Hadith from Sahih Muslim recounts the reduction of daily prayers:

“Allah enjoined fifty prayers on my followers… and I kept returning to my Lord and asking for reduction until He said, 'O Muhammad, they are five, and they are all equivalent to fifty.’” (Muslim: 162)

How Muslims Commemorate Isra wal Miraj

Muslims worldwide commemorate the Isra wal Miraj on the 27th night of Rajab, though practices may vary. Common acts include:

  • Offering voluntary prayers.

  • Reflecting on the event’s significance.

  • Learning about Masjid Al-Aqsa’s role in Islam.

  • Sharing the story with family and community.

Hadith aout Al Aqsa
Mosque
VIRTUES OF AL AQSA
Masjid Al-Aqsa – The Second House of Allah on Earth (Hadith 1)

Abu Dharr (ra) reported that he asked the Prophet (saw), “O Messenger of Allah, which Masjid was built first on earth”? The Prophet (saw) replied, “The Sacred Masjid of Makkah”. Abu Dharr (ra) again asked, “Which was next”? The Prophet (saw) said, “Masjid Al-Aqsa”. Abu Dharr (ra) further asked, “How long was the period between the building of the two Masjids”? The Prophet (saw) said, “Forty years”. Apart from these, offer your prayer anywhere when it is time to pray, although excellence is in praying in these Masjids”.
